Yes you can but like "rtheriot" said you must take it in stride. Making small goals a week will help you tremendously. I would recommend you getting a personal trainer and a dietitian.
Also its going to be very difficult in getting a six pack, and depending on how large you are you may have excess skin. Just want to tell you that the health way to loose weight is about 1-2 pounds a week, those people on the biggest looser and shows like that are special circumstances. They have medical personal and trainers and dietitians with them 24-7 so don't get disheartened when you are not loosing 12 lbs a week.
The Answer is YES!!
Anything you put your mind to your going to be able to do, you may not look like vin diesel in the end, but you can be the best you.
It's good to start with smaller goals though, and gradually get there - a huge bounce in a short amount of time is not only unhealthy, it's a sure way to see yourself balloon back up 6 months later. Fad diets are rarely sustainable.
I've lost 65+ pounds in the last 12 months and am on my way there myself.
How have I done it, well it started with my Girlfriend, who lost 85, and a good friend who lost 70, my mother who dropped 40, and hundreds of thousands of others who lose weight every month. Go to http://www.weightwatchers.com/
Once you start burning off the excess, you can start refining what's left, and there are a 100 different options for that, you'll chose what's right for you when you get there. But baby steps like lose 10 lbs, 10% of your body weight, are going to get you there faster than staring a guys 12 pack, like a 16 year old girl. Work towards the end-game, concentrate on more attainable, immediate goals.
Hope that Helps,
Rob

It depends on age and how obese a person is, but generally speaking, yes most people through diet and exercise can get their bodyfat down to a point where abs are visible.
The limiting factor is excess skin which may have to be removed.
The answer is yes, but you need to want it, and you need to be devoted to it.
I've been overweight (not quite obese, but almost) for awhile, and I've finally decided to change that, but I have so much going on that it is sometimes difficult to get in the exercise I need and cook the food that I should be eating.
If you can afford it, I'll second and third the recommendations for a personal trainer and a dietitian. If you're honest with yourself and them, and engage with their questions, you'll be on your way. The trainer will help you set realistic goals while simultaneously pushing you beyond your comfort zone without hurting your body, and the dietitian should provide you with a diet plan that is satisfying and sustainable and healthy.
If you don't have the money, I recommend subscribing to Men's Health and investing in a pen, some post-it notes, and a notebook. MH has a LOT of information, so the trick is to filter out what is useful to you and what isn't. Whenever you're reading an article in the magazine or online and you see a useful bit of information, write it down. Anything you want remind yourself to do on a daily basis, write down on a post-it note and put it where you'll read it. If you you're writing down a lot, you might want create a filing system and organize it.
With MH, I'm trying to write down food recipes that sound delicious (they're already healthy and aimed at satisfying).
I've seen the "flabby skin" thing mentioned a lot. A dermatologist would give you a better answer than any of us, but here's what I recall from my research: as long as you don't lose weight at an unhealthy speed, the skin should shrink to match your gradually changing body. This is especially true if you keep yourself well-hydrated. Skin is naturally very elastic, and will stretch or shrink over whatever form your bones, muscles, and fat give it. If you lose weight too quickly, your skin won't have time to shrink accordingly.
Yes it is possible. I noticed that one response mentioned Weight Watchers. Excellent choice. The one that I'm on currently is Jenny Craig. This is the first time I've attempted to lose weight and it's been a smashing success. I am a bit over 6'5" and am naturally big but who wants to have a gut? Not me that's for damn sure. At the beginning of June I joined Jenny (so 2 months ago) and I've lost 25.8lbs. That's 285 --> 259.2. However, keep in mind that there are several factors involved in weight loss. As you're a guy, your weight loss will be faster than that of a woman. Also, it depends how old you are. I'm 19. AND, last but not least, exercise. I've done very little in the way of exercise and know just how little fun it is when you just don't feel great physically. However, in my desire to lose weight faster (because it's fun once you get started), I've begun to wake up each morning to do about 25-35 sit-ups and back extensions (hello six-pack!) followed with 10-15 minutes of jumping rope. However, don't stress about exercise yet. And, as AA says, it's one day at a time. Another important item: do you want your own food or pre-packaged? Jenny does the latter, Weight Watchers the former. No matter what you do, good luck man! Any Q? Email me for an A.
