T-Gel works miracles! Like others it uses salicylic acid but in different amounts due to having multiple product types. It is more expensive but is worth it and by far the best I have ever used.
The easiest dandruff cure which is rarely mentioned is SUN.
Dandruff is caused by the fungus Malassezia globosa, which feeds on dead skin and thrives in warm, dark, moist environments. Like your head which is indoors working all day.
Similarly, you may notice that your dandruff goes away when your hair is cut short, which gets more light and air on your scalp (you've never seen a bald guy with dandruff).
As Chad mentioned in his post, dandruff does become resistant if you only use a single type of treatment over a long period of time.
There many effective shampoos that you can alternate with check the label:
Nizoral was recently made OTC and uses the antifungal ketoconazole.
Head & Shoulders uses zinc pyrithione
Selsun Blue uses selenium sulfide
T-Gel uses the foul smelling, but effective coal tar (exactly what it sounds like).
Finally, vinegar kills almost any fungus. Leave it on in the shower for a few of minutes before rinsing. It's a cheap and natural alternative/addition to the other treatments and you may find it's all you need.

Alternate Nizoral A-D and Head & Shoulders shampoos each time you wash your hair. Dandruff is caused by the growth of dermatophytes and yeast on your scalp. These two shampoos use different methods of attacking these critters, so by alternating them, you're giving the problem a 1-2 punch.
Also, you can try Sebulex which works to help your scalp exfoliate its dead skin cells and also attacks the microorganisms that cause dandruff. The active ingredient is salicylic acid, a common ingredient in acne face wash, so if you have some of that around, check the label and try it out in the shower on your scalp. I've heard that's quite effective.
