What is the preferred length for sideburns these days?
This definitely depends on a few factors, like what hair style/color you wear as well as part of the country you live in and your social environment. I prefer getting my hair cut by women stylists and asking their opinion on these types of topics.

I always have mine trimmed up to mid-ear. But I have my hair cut very short on the sides.
Doesn't anything go these days? I wear my sideburns quite long - level with the bottom of my ears, and I don't trim on my face, only the bottom. They balance my face this way. Just keep them trimmed up.
Burns should be based on the length & style of hair. Longer, shaggier hair should equal longer burns. Shorter hair should render shorter more maintained burns. My hair is short and I've been using the Schick Quattro Titanium Trimmer: http://21gent.com/2009/06/17/schick-quattro-titanium-trimmer/
