Bottom line when it comes to losing weight is calories IN must be less than calories OUT. That's all there is to it. Eat less and do more. And be patient and consistent.
Nothing at the gym (or anywhere else) can target fat loss to one spot on your body. I recently lost about 60 pounds and strongly believe the absolute most important and effective change you can make is your diet... Sure, exercise helps, but until you start eating right, you might as well not bother with the gym if weight loss is your goal.
Instead of reading about treadmills, ab machines, and exercise bikes, start reading about food. It's not that hard...you can absolutely do it. Good luck!
Cardio/running. It is the best possible thing you can do to trim stomach fat. Crunches and sit ups will build the muscle underneath all of the fat, but they won't cause you to lose the fat that is already there. The best advice I have is to go running. Start out slow at first, and build up to longer time periods. You will see vast improvement.
I do agree with Jesse in that dieting is vital as well. Eat right and do some cardio, and you're on the right track. YOU CAN DO IT!
Disagree with with Jesse. Most people have visible abdominals, especially men that are less than 10 lbs over weight. However, excess belly fat covers most of the prominent muscles we commonly refer to as "abs" (rectus abdominis, external obliques, internal obliques, transverse abdominis). Try limiting your carb intake, especially after 2pm, as most of the energy that is created from carb metabolism is stored as fat. Instead, choose foods high in fiber as well as anything with a low glycemic load.
As for exercising, make sure you are keeping your HR in a fat-burning plateau, not an aerobic or anaerobic training zone. Most men find this at a 6mph jog/run
Well to be honest, the quickest and easiest way to lose the fat is surgery... but at the gym it's going to be the cardio machines! These will be your best friends! If you do a regular work out routine it's BEST to do cardio before you start your workour to get your heart rate up. This will help you burn more calories while working out. Then after you work out you should do 20plus mins of cardio whether it be elliptical or treadmill on the fat burning setting.
With doing crunches and sit ups, pointless. You won't be able to see them until you lose the fat that's covering them up first.

P90X http://www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/p90x.do?code=P90XDOTCOM In just 4 weeks of this program I have gone from 255 to 238lbs. I am down from a size 38 to 36 pant and have dropped from a 29% body fat to 23%. It's tough but works. I wasn't able to do 40% of the exercises in the first and second week, now that number is more like 20%. That's due to significant strength gains.
I am currently using their lean version of the program. You'll eat more too. Although changes in diet will be significant. No fries, chips, coke, large sandwiches etc.
Probably the most surefire way would be to workout like alpinist/mountain guides--"Mountain Athlete":http://www.mtnathlete.com
Another way that would surely do the trick would be to workout like the "reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico’s deadly Copper Canyons," famous for running "hundreds of miles without rest." Check out Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen
If you want quick, I agree with Peter, get surgery.
Step 1: Start walking daily until you build enough stamina to run, run 3-4 times a week.
Step 2: Stop eating shitty.

Lots of crunches, sit-ups, and you may want to try dieting. Exercise helps a lot but if you are eating too much crap you never will get your abs how you may want.
