iPhone 3GS!
Any Garmin product from their Nuvi line is awesome, with great battery life.
Totally agree with the iphone 3GS. Why carry a cellphone, mp3 player, digital camera, GPS device, camcorder and laptop when you can just carry one sweet little beast.
The antenna in the iphone 3GS just can not compare to the antenna in something like the Garmin eTrex Legend HCx, you can find it on sale for under $250. I have been looking a while now and this is the one that I think gives the best bang for the buck.
I would go with the Garmin Vista HCX $250
It has a high sensitivity chip (H), color screen ©, and expandable memory (X). It also has a built in digital compass and barometer/altimeter.
Fully waterproof.
The compass and barometer are the only differences between the legend and the vista.
I use mine daily on my bike to get speed, distance, and turn by turn directions (with extra City Navigator software -$99)
Fits in the palm of your hand, and easy to use one-handed.

Mio is a little known company in America (much bigger in Europe), but they make a couple of great GPS options. My only complaint is that the battery life isn't great, so if you're looking for something that doesn't need to be plugged in most of the time, this might be a problem
