I've been using Proraso for about 4 months now with really good success. I also use their aftershave. Keep in mind I shave with a Merkur Futur safety razor and a brush, instead of that nonsense that comes out of a can. I got most of my stuff from Classic Shaving in Palm Springs on my honeymoon. (wedding gift from the wife).
Investing in a good pre-shave oil will truly make all the difference. Shave oils dramatically improve the razors glide while helping to eliminate razor burn, bumps and rashes that you typically get when shaving without leaving the skin oily. We carry only the best pre-shave oils around for guys, so you can’t go wrong with any, but we do have to be a bit partial to our own Grooming Lounge Beard Master Shave Oil. Winner of the 2009 Men’s Health Grooming Award, the oil can inspire even the dullest razor to do great things. Try it and your face will be happy.
BeBest oil will be Truefitt & Hill. Grooming lounge is uninteresting and not so efficient. But best of the best is using nothing because every time when you will use this oil, will stay on your brush and after a relative short time: surprise your brush will lose capacity of making lather. Instead a towel warmed 5’ into microwave and applied on your face will be more efficient, more pleasant and I suppose cheaper.
Checkout "The Art of Shaving" online store or stores nationwide. They have a lavender (for sensitive skin) pre-shave oil that I have used for about a year now. I only shave once to twice a week so I am cutting some pretty heavy stubble when I do shave and this stuff is a tremendous help. I really like the lubrication it adds to a shave. They offer a few different scents (with different essential oils) as well as an unscented version. The lavender one smells great without being Fre-Breezy!
I have found Toro to be really good at preventing razor bumps, you have to let a sit for a minute or so but it does really well.
Anthony's from Sephora but hands down Art of Shaving kit. I will never use anything else.

John Allan's slick water pre-shave oil does the trick for me. The oil in it don't make my skin feel greasy after, any excess washes off easily which is a must for me.

How much should you tip a hair stylist?
I don't know about a comparison, but I've used L'Occitane after shave cream for years and I love it.
