Suggestions on a tasteful way to store/organize CDs in my home? Seems like most of whats available are towers (I dont have most of CD cases anymore) or the soft-zip cases that are more appropriate for my car.
Rip them to iTunes and sell the discs on ebay.
Tastefully out of sight forever =)
Basically you've got two fundamentally different ways to store CDs: with or without the jewel boxes
If you're like me, and prefer to store CDs with the jewel boxes, then it's gonna be bulky no matter what. The Can Am media cabinets are great. They don't look the greatest, but they're the highest capacity ones and you can stack and arrange them very flexibly. I own three of the large ones.
If you need portable solutions, the kind DJs use seems most convenient. They usually work with or without the jewel cases.
If you don't care about the jewel cases, your options are more varied. You can use bookshelf inserts like: http://www.mmdesign.com/products/slider-10-in.php
I like solutions with this design as well: http://cdrackem.com/dise100aucds.html. They don't make them at high capacities, however.
I like the www.mmdesign.com kits if you dont mind getting rid of jewel cases.

I have a
Slappa Case
the slappa range are well made and look great on my book case
You could always hang the CDs on the wall using a WallMatz Hanger
or keep them in a box
go to the store and buy a nice looking cd tower/ cabinet.
or put all of your cd's in a cardboard box and put them in your basement/garage.
When it comes to storing CDs or DVDs in the home it is a pain to find something that will match your current decor without taking over the room, while storing them the way you want. Even worse than that most store bought cabinets are made of garbage.
Look for a nontraditional avenue to store your media. Perhaps an old dresser with several drawers you find at a garage sale to store you media. Or build one your self as a winter project. I have always wanted to build one in the wall so it is recessed with a frame around it making it look like a picture. Also a lot of local woodworkers are hurting for work and could help you build/design something.
Either way, take all of those CDs/DVDs, get yourself a 2TB external hard drive, and rip them all in perfect, loss less form, and join the digital world.
Rip your CDs onto your computer and transfer them to a media server like the Linksys NAS200. From there you can stream your music over your wireless network or to any wi-fi enabled device in your house. I'd suggest a Yamaha Neo HD YMC-700 wi-fi enabled receiver so you can use your home theater to blast out your tunes during a party, or create a little background music while having guests for dinner.
As for the actual CDs, put them in a box in the basement.
I'm with those who say rip 'em in iTunes. I use a ReadyNAS Pro to house the Apple Lossless tracks, and a Squeezebox Duet for playback.
I like boltz. They have both CD and LP storage as well as other types of furniture and storage
Shallow citrus crate, tucked under your bed. Better yet: toss the jewel cases, slip the CDs in a Case Logic 320-CD binder/organizer, and throw that on a bookshelf.
Jewelsleeves are pretty good - they hold the CD, the booklet, and the whole tray card in 3 individual pockets. The pocket that holds the CD itself, has safety sleeve padding to protect the CD.
They'll give out sample Jewelsleeves if you request one.
Ever since DiscSox switched the material they use to make their media sleeves from vinyl (yuck) to archival-safe polypropylene, that's all I use. You can save all artwork from any media source, CDs, DVDs, Games, they even have a sleeve for the Blu-ray titles, which I got a lot of for Christmas, and dividers to help organize large collections. They also have lots of containers to put the sleeves in, and for those who were looking for a "tasteful" way to store your discs, check out their new HomDecor line of decorative cases. Really nice. It's the best media storage "system" on the market, hands-down.
They were really great about sending me sleeve samples.

Depending on how many CD's/DVD's you have the best storage device on the market is the Can Am media cabinet. It is a little pricey, but they are made very, very well.
