Go to IKEA, get a catalog (they're free) and a quiche (4.99?). Go home and flip through the catalog and study where certain things are placed. Notice how they create seemingly two rooms out of one by strategically placing a bookshelf here or a lamp there. Its these types of tips you're looking for. Don't then go out and buy stuff. Just study the designs of these places. IKEA catalogs are a great tool for a designer. Its not about what you own, its its about where you place it in a room.

I don't know about design advice, but you could probably put together a classy apartment just by searching: cribcandy.com
check out Freshome.com This site is probably a bit overkill, but it will show you the extreme's of design. In a lot of cases there are some simple (cheap) things you can do that will really pop at your place.
For an individual item, ie: you want to look at sinks or cabinet handles, I think there's not more better than Remodelista
I'll 2nd Apartment Therapy for misc suggestions.
Unplggd (part of Apt.Therapy) is a great resource for tech in the house.
