However, I would assume if it's a fairly upscale restaurant and you're dealing with a professional host, you're looking at between $20 and $50 for "preferential treatment" over someone whom already has a reservation. It's not easy telling someone that they'll have to wait, especially when they're going to spend $100+ on their meal. So be discrete, patient and expect little.
Always call first and make reservations, always. When you do, be polite, courteous and just tell them what you're looking for specifically in the table: a good view, secluded, outdoors, etc. Remember the name of the host/ess that helped you and tip them a ten or something when you've been shown to your table.

At a nightclub this amount will be significantly more, especially at a top club. Sometimes just buying bottles/reserving a table/table minimums won't get you the best table, you might have to grease your host a bit.
These days with all the IRS crackdowns though, a good host will never TELL you the amount, but in most places (Vegas, etc) $100 is the starting point at a busy spot on a busy night. That's not including your bottles/minimums.
No need to bribe - call ahead and make reservations, just ask for a good table, i.e. with a view....
