I have very thick straight hair and Baxter's of California is the best stuff I've used - It's a clay pomade that is easier to rub into your hair than other brands, and one container lasts me about 6-8 months because you only need to use a dab of the stuff. You won't sweat it out and it keeps your hair manageable all day long. It's a little more expensive but I don't mind because it lasts for a long time and it actually works.

You need a product that's an anti-humnectant -- nutshell that means it won't make your 4 head sweat. Grooming Lounge styling products wont make you sweat and neither will American Crew.
Living in Miami I can sympathize with you. I use Aveda's Grooming Clay to keep my hair from doing its own weird thing. It helps keep the shape while providing movement and minimizing that special product "shine" that some products can produce.
