My family has owned and operated an independent paint store in NY for 43 years, so I agree that painting your walls will be the first step to eleminate your odor. However, do yourself a favor and stay far, far away from Lowes. Get yourself some decent painting supplies and top-of-the-line paint, anything less won't do the job the right way.

Make sure your walls and ceilings are clean. Then prime them with a product by the Zinser company called BIN. This is an alcohol based primer that is an odor killer and stain sealer. However, this stuff will stink like hell when you are using it, so make sure you ventilate properly. Once dry (within a few hours) top coat with any Benjamin Moore product. Go to your local paint store and ask for one of the following products - AURA (top of the line), Regal (second best, still better than anything at Lowes) or NATURA (environmentaly friendly, excellent product). Pick your colors and enjoy!
