While there are better cases for pure protection, I think Griffin's iClear might be your best bet. It's a clear polycarbonate shell, with a detachable armband, so you keep the phone in it when you're not working out, and simply clip on the band when you need it. I've got the iClear for my iPod touch 2G, and it's done well for me.
The best iPhone case is the the Contour Showcase It is one of the most reliable, durable and functional cases on the market. It is made of strong polycarbonate covered in shock-absorbing rubber to ensure he safety of your iPhone. It also comes with a removable belt clip that allows you to wear it during workouts while protecting the screen. This case has protected my iPhone from numerous 5-foot falls onto concrete. It is perfect for working out, protecting your phone and is relatively inexpensive ($35.)

This might be a stretch but theres something called a Wrist Cubby that will hold any common device (iPod, iPhone, BlackBerry, cell). It goes around your wrist or forearm and allows you to still be able to feel a vibe from calls and messages. Plus it'll only set ya back $13.

I've used multiple ipods with my workout routine. From the 2g, to the video, tall nano, fat nano, and shuffle.
I am happiest with the shuffle clipped to my shirt and out of my way.....you can probably pick up a last gen model for a couple bucks more than the "nicer" 3g cases.
That being said though, my iphone 3G with pandora is also awesome. I use long ear buds and keep the thing in my pocket.
Does anyone else think the armbands are silly?
