Sure, sure Ole'Calvin has some pretty good threads but if you don't wanna sell your moms china to buy one here's a little secret on what to get next...COSTCO'S plain white tees. Perfect if you already have your $500 Diesel pants to match.
I'm sure American Apparel is the obvious choice, but I'm yet to find a piece of clothing I enjoy more than their jersey-knit t-shirts.
As far as I'm concerned nothing beats Calvin Klein. They have that "just right" amount of fabric around the waist-- not too tight, but could still potentially hide a little gut.
American Apparel shirts are great - exceptionally soft and have a great fit. My favorite has to be the slim-fit Polo Ralph Lauren shirts though - wide variety of colors, simple designs, good sleeve length and surprisingly soft.

super soft, slim fit tees with throw back appeal. wear one around for about 20 min and you will be hooked.
American Apparel is cheap, casual and fits most body shapes. If you want to spoil yourself I would suggest Robert Geller NY. Much better cut than most brands out there and the shirts are made in Japan (quality is guaranteed).
At the end of the day it is best to shop around yourself to find the one that fits you. Don't hesitate to try different sizes to find the right fit. Lastly don't buy tshirts with synthetic materials like polyester.
I have had some Crazy Shirts for 10+ years and while they may have faded a little, they have held their shape, form and softness. They are not cheap, but with their crazy designs, most seem timeless. Their "classic" t-shirts are the best for not seeming to go out of date. They have stores in some states, both on east or west coast, and their customer service is the best to deal with. They have a great guarantee, and seem to honor it without asking too many questions. They also have great shorts, and other items. You probably will get tired of the t-shirt long before it is time to be toss it.
I'm partial to James Perse. Good fit, great texture, and they hold up well. Splendid Mills is a close second.
American Apparel are great and you can't beat the cost for a high quality t-shirt.
Gap always has good shirts cheap, and so does J. Crew, but both of these aren't going to last very long. American Apparel is awesome, but my all time favorite would have to be a Ralph Lauren. Classy, soft, quality...can't ask for more.
I'm a fan of Express and American Apparel. Express' tees fit well and are incredibly comfortable, but can wear out in a few months. American Apparel's tees are comfortable and well-made, but can sometimes fit awkwardly.
Banana Republic has the best value-price ration. Go with the Fitted Cotton Crew or V - the stretch models are less comfortable and don't survive washing as well. http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=35922&vid=1&pid=273929&scid=273929372
PLUS: Clint Eastwood wore one on the cover of Esquire - Can't go wrong there: http://www.esquire.com/cover-detail?year=2009&month=1

I like Alternative Apparel's Destroyed tee. It's supersoft, worn in, but durable. Perfect fit, shorter sleeves. http://www.alternativeapparel.com/Shop/ItemDetails.aspx?ProductID=377&CategoryID=15&Overstock=False&Section=&SectionUrl=&Consumer=Y&Color=VW
My favorite tee's though are from Ever. They too are super soft and stylish. Little more expensive, but worth picking up a couple. http://shop.ever-us.com/
I stumbled upon this website and it has some of the most unique, coolest looking t-shirt design I have ever seen. If you want to look like everbody else than this is probabaly not the website for you.
Every day they realease a new one designed by different artist. They're printed on super soft shirt just like the American Appareal one. I have 4 from them so far
check it out it's called "design by humans"

They aren't especially stylish, but I'm a big fan of the t-shirts from Duluth Trading Co. (http://www.duluthtrading.com). They're typically $15 each, but they occasionally go on sale for $10. They're long enough to avoid what they call "plumber's butt," don't shrink with repeated washings, and wear very well. I bought a stack of them when they were on sale over a year ago, and they're all still in service--and I wear one almost every day. Duluth is a company that caters to working-class people, and I've had good luck with most of their merchandise. You won't spend a lot of money, and they have a liberal return policy.
honestly, this is where it's at. LOLA NY T-Shirts are the f*ckin sh*t, great pima cotton quality, very light, and highly original...I'll agree, American Apparel's are great, but you see people wearing them everywhere and you call someone out on wearing one from a mile away. And if LOLA NY isn't your cup of tea, roll over to www.diesel.com and check out their T-Shirts, great fit, good selection of V-Neck's (their more expensive label "Black Gold" is siiick)
You wear non cotton skivvies, a speedo, square cut or lycra jammers under your board shorts. This is to give you support, prevent your "business" from rubbing against the velcro fly as well as raw fabric, seams and pubic hair and add more fabric as SPF protection. Plus it prevents you from coming up nekked if your shorts get pulled down or off by the wave(s). It also allows you if its a speedo or swimwear underneath to take off your board shorts, lie on a towel and get a tan as well as wash out your shorts of sand then yourself and put the shorts back on with no chance of sand on them.
I recently have really gotten into John Varvatos Slub Knit tees and v-necks. They are a little on the pricey side but have reached that t-shirt mecca of not being too tight nor too loose. They also look great, Ive literally worn them everywhere and get lots of compliments on them all the time
I disagree with American Apparel, while they do feel great and are a great fit, they're poorly made in my opinion, if anything I would opt for Alternative Apparel. Gap's favourite tees are very nice, as is Calvin Klein's.

I personally have found to fall in love with the softness of Ever tees myself. They do come with downsides though (that have caused me to move on): They have a tendency to wear out (they are super thin which makes them feel incredible), and they are pricey. They also have a wide neck, if that matters, they look very vintage and that can be too ragged in some contexts. I own many James Perse crew/v tees and wear them the majority of the time now. Though I won't buy anymore, the Ever tee shirts I have always put a smile on my face and will wear them until they are all gone. The Gap/Banana Republic makes a great crew/v that is a little thicker and are still super soft.

Banana Republic has a great fit in my opinion at least for tees - and damn style.
It really depends on your body type IMO.
