Any good ideas on how to organize a room full of books and DVDs, apart from basic bookshelves?

Here are a couple unique storage units. You'll probably have to contact the manufacturer to get pricing, but they're definitely not basic.
If you want to go a little more mainstream I'd check out the Sapien Bookcase.
The best way is to use a media stand. I also ran into a similar situation before. What really helped is a media shelf attached to the wall. I got my Double Floating Wall Storage from Timelesselements.com

I've seen some pretty cool homemade bookshelves on Engadget.com's featured workspaces. Some that stick out were made out of cinder blocks and a few pieces of wood. You can put DVDs and CDs in the cinder blocks' cutouts and obviously use the shelves as well. They're unique and if you used decent wood for the shelves could look pretty cool as well.
