The best (and what helped with my neck pain) is to get a memory foam pillow. You can find one fairly cheap but as with everything else you get what you pay for. Here's some from Overstock in king size form, but I would go to a store and feel them. The foam is made in different densities, and that can make a big difference. So make sure you test a couple in store before you buy.
I agree on the tepurpedic, I just picked one up. While I was shoping there are pillows with more a box-shape that are marketed as "side-sleeping" pillows. Not sure how well they work, but they were available at bed, bath & beyond in all 3 sizes.
I love my Sleep Innovations pillow. It has memory foam encased in standard down-like pillow, so sort of the best of both worlds. And, on sale at Kohl's, it was a lot cheaper than a Temperpedic. I've had it for six months, and it hasn't crushed down. I love it.

I also sleep on my back and on my side. I use a Tempur-Pedic Contur-Plush, which has been recently renamed into the Symphony. It provides the hight needed when sleeping on the side, but softens down when laying on my back.

Tempurpedic is absolutely the way to go. Brookstone has some great options
I been fighting this battle as a side/back-sleeper, and I think I've finally won. I'd get these incredible neck pains from a variety of pillows (down, synthetic, expensive memory foam). Two weeks ago, I purchased the "Gosa Lilja"http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60125281 pillow from IKEA and have not had a problem since. It's designed to support both your neck and shoulders (important for a predominant side-sleeper), rather than just your neck, and the latex foam composition is not as dense or warm as the aforementioned memory-foam brands. It's also half the price.
I bought the tepurpedic body pillow, because it is the biggest pillow, I am sleeping alot better now with it. It was kinda high price at 199.99 but worth it.
It's all a matter of taste. My favourite pillow by far is a cheap piece of foam from Ikea

Beats the hundred dollar memory foam things when it comes to my comfort. You are going to be different.

They're expensive, but I have a Tempurpedic that is without a doubt the most comfortable pillow I've ever owned. One side is for sleeping on your back, the other on your side. It'll run you about $120 but it's well worth it.
