I own my tux. That being said, there is nothing like partying your balls off in rented clothes.

I would rent if this is the only black tie event you see yourself attending in the next year or so. Most tux rentals will run $100-$150 for suit, shirt, shoes, etc. If you see yourself at more than 2-3 black tie events in the next year, it may be cheaper to buy.
If the black tie event is a wedding, you might want to check to make sure there is not a specific type of tux that you may need to wear if you are part of the wedding party. You may have your own tux but if everyone is wearing matching tuxes and you are not you will stick out.
I'm with Grant, Rent. The freedom of not caring what happens to your tux is a terrific feeling! Plus no cleaning it, folding it, or dealing with it after the fun is done!
I agree with Jesse - you should probably check ahead of time. I do know that it is kind of a hassle having to clean my tux after parties etc., so renting is probably a better option.
This is a good question. Depends on a lot of factors. How old are you and do have a lot of future events that you're likely to attend. If its going to be a lot, then buying is the way to go. If you've already filled out and won't be gaining weight/changing a lot of size then buying is the way to go. If this is just a one-time a year thing, I'd probably just rent and suck it up. Renting is absurdly expensive, but you figure you have to go to three events where buying is worthwhile. Either way, party hard.

It depends on how often you'll wear it. Price out a decent tux and rental. Figure how often you would wear the tux and see if the cost would be worth it for you to buy.
If its close, I would opt to buy since you can get a much better fix
