I am your height, slightly heavier, but have gone the custom route. I will never go back, we have a great custom clothing company here in Dallas called Q Custom Clothier. They have incredible fabrics and will make your garments to your specifications. Even if you do not live in Dallas, you can order online or call in. Here is a link to their site - http://www.qcustomclothier.com/
Banana Republic suits fit pretty well, but you wil still have to get it tailored a bit to get a nice fit for your frame. If you decide to check out BR, keep in mind that they do carry 36S & 36R on many of their suits, but you must order it. These sizes are not carried in their stores. Also if you are near one try H&M.
I'd recommend Indochino - Custom tailored, at off the rack prices. (Where else are you going to find a made to measure suit for under $500?)
Depending on your budget, many of the higher end European manufacturers make slim suits, like Z Zegna, Armani, etc. As for some less expensive brands, try Ted Baker or Kenneth Cole.
Most places you'll find do not carry smaller suits, sometime you can get lucky. I was just at Bachrach today and they happened to carry 36R. If you want something cheap I would try shopping online with topman or asos.com. They have decent suits that are more modern in fit with both the Jacket and the pant. For instance with topman suits some of them carry the option of a skinny dress pant or straight fit. The thinner leg and also a two button will give more of an appearance of height. In all cases you'll need to suit tailored.
I'd recommend a place called Jimmy Au's . They specialize in mens clothing for those who are 5'8" and under. They're located in Beverly Hills, CA, but offer online shopping and will ship to Hawaii, Alaska, and Canada.
Hope this helps.
I can second Jimmy Au's. They were my tailor starting in middle school and 10 years later I am still visiting Jimmy.
If you can, I truly suggest to check out their store in person. Although Jimmy no longer handles the business end of the store, he is frequently there helping customers himself. He will also do custom tailoring for a suit you find elsewhere and bring it in.
Whichever suit you wind up with, you just need to make friends with your local tailor. It's tough to buy a suit online; and it may fit you beautifully when it arrives, or it may not. Your tailor can help, and think of it as supporting your local businessmen/women. I'm 5'7" 140 - pretty much everything gets tailored.

You HAVE to check out http://www.maxwellsclothiers.com/
They are AMAZING. They come to my town twice a year. They make custom made suits and shirts for less than what you would pay in a store. Last year i bought 6 shirts and two suits - CUSTOM MADE - for $1200. They are the best suits i have ever owned.
Hopefully you live close to one of the places the stop.
I had a friend who was about your size and he would get his suits from the boys section at Brooks Brothers. They are just as fashionable and a lot cheaper than the ones in the mens section. Plus Brooks does tailoring for you.

I'm just a couple inches taller but weigh about the same and I enjoy suits from Banana Republic and J.Crew. Both places offer suits that fit great and are made of good material that can suit any climate, hot weather in Southern California to the cold in New York. Plus their styles are point.
