What is the average cost for getting a suit tailored?
I have an ill-fitting suit. How much can I expect to pay to have it altered? The jacket is too big, and the legs are also too big.
It almost sounds like you should be shopping for a new suit. A tailor can only do so much. Tailors refine the fit of a suit that for the most part fits you pretty well. Sleeves shortened/let out, waist of the pant in or out, length of the pant leg, and fit of the jacket around the midsection are pretty much your options with a tailor. Depending on which of these services you need from a tailor it can range anywhere from $20 for one to $100 for several. If the shoulders of the jacket are too big or the legs of the pants are too baggy, there is little a tailor can do. If this is the case with your suit, it might be better to cut your losses and purchase a suit that fits you well and needs minor tailoring.

Minor alterations can usually be done on the cheap, but for what you are talking about I would guess that a new jacket and pants might be the answer. Where I live in Washington DC there is a local drycleaners where the owner will do tailoring for $60 per suit (jacket and pants). That is pretty reasonable, based on what I have heard other people paying.

A good tailor isn't cheap, and cheap tailors aren't good! that being said it is all relative to how much you need done to get the suit fitting you properly.
