I'll second (or third or whatever) American Apparel for the hoodies. Yes, they are more expensive, but I've noticed 3 major things about them that set them apart:
1. Pull cord is good material- my gray hoodie has been washed countless times and the cord is not frayed and looks like new. I'd suggest tying it before you wash it because it likes to try to escape and it's quite hard to get it back in.
2. Zipper cloth is good quality. Why does this matter? Because, unlike el-cheapo Hanes hoodies and the like, the cloth around the zipper does not shrink at a different rate than the rest of the garment, which can cause a wavy effect in the zipper when it's not zipped up. My AA hoodie lays flat in the front.
3. No pilling. Again, washed my hoodie a ton, and still no pilling. El-cheapos pill and look awful after only a few washes.
Couple of other nice things: the inside is SUPER SOFT and will stay that way for a long time and the sleeves are nice and long (good if you're like me and have monkey arms).
Go with AA, definitely.
American Apparrel has every color imaginable in zip hoodies and most all of their clothing is void of a logo or brand on it, which is quite nice. Sometimes it's great to see people in attire that doesn't scream I BOUGHT THIS FROM ABERCROMBIE AND FITCH. The only thing about American Apparel is the fact that I have a hard time paying $47-$50 for a plain zip hoodie.
Another good place for you to try is Old Navy or sometimes even the Gap. They have really good deals and prices ALL the time.
Good luck!

Alternative Apparel is a nice change of pace from American Apparel. Similar stuff, (supposedly) more sustainably gathered and the company does a lot of good. Super soft hoodies that stack up to the other AA in great colors.

Check out some of the american apparel vendors on Amazon. Some have cheaper prices than in-store.
uniqlo and american apparel.
uniqlo is less expensive, but feels very similar in quality. I think their hoodiesare around $30 instead of AA's $40
j.crew
not expensive. high quality.
on sale, you can get them for $25-$40.
You can pay extra for a label on a made-in-China textile, or just get the basic product at K-mart
75% off of a good selection of hoodies. they make quality stuff.
You can purchase American Apparel hoodies on eBay in packs of three, for half the price that American Apparel sells them for. That's the best way to buy American Apparel clothing.
Use eBay for American Apparel hoodies. You can pick them up in packs of three for cheap or even singles. I normally pay about $18 for them there.
Lululemon makes great quality hoodies, though they're a bit heavy, and definitely not cheap.
However, I can say I've had mine for 5 years, use it mostly as an outer jacket, and get compliments on it all the time.
I can't believe nobody mentioned L.L. Bean's selection. I have bot an AA zip hoodie and a LL Bean, and the latter wins hands down in my opinion. Superior fabric. Heavier, lined feel. Several cool unique colors.
Another option is Carhart. Very heavy duty.

It seems like everyone is pretty high on American Apparel here, but not too keen on the price.
if that's the case: take a look at Alternative Apparel. They make indentical items for less and the quality doesn't suffer one bit.
I have to go with Carhart.
Carhart hoodies
They are somewhat expensive, but they last. I've been abusing one for over 15 years now. If you go with the internally lined thermal waffle textile, it will keep you toasty (field tested in the thick of winter doing cell phone tower work in Kansas).
I like American Apparel, but I also like the Champion hoodies at Target. They are really cheap and made of good quality cotton (soft and druable) I have one from 3 years ago that's still in great shape!
