I've always been extremely happy with Crumpler bags. They have both messenger bag and backpack varieties.

Kata makes a good daypack for less than $100.
I've had mine for 2 months now and i don't regret the purchase. It's comfortable enough for long hikes and it doesn't scream "expensive camera inside"
I have had the best luck with the Burton Zoom Pack.
great comfy shoulder straps holds laptop and the internal compartment completely comes out if you want to haul something other than your camera gear. plenty of spaces to fit 2 bodies plus lenses/gadgets. Also fits my 15in Mac with a neoprene sleeve.
I know this is an old post but for anyone who comes across (like I did via Google) in their own quest for the same answer, here's an awesome solution:
1. Build a kick@ss customized Timbuk2 laptop messenger bag:
http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/bagbuilder/custom-laptop-messenger
2. Get a Tenba "Removable Photo Insert" for messenger bags:
http://www.tenba.com/products/Messenger--Removable-Photo-Insert.aspx
Done!
Notes:
- You could theoretically use any messenger bag, but will it have any personality, let alone yours?
- There are other inserts, but they're sh1t. Trust me.
- Ok, Tenba makes a pretty nicely-featured photo/laptop bag, but it's VERY techie which has appeals to some people, but especially photogs/geeks.
- That is all.
