I have friends/training partners that use various Garmin products, including the 405 and the 305. I'm waiting for the 310, which is triathlon specific since its waterproof to 50 meters and has the ability to track the swim, bike and run, including using the GPS functions.
I recommend getting the Garmin Forerunner 310XT. I own both the Garmin Forerunner 305 and Suunto T5. I prefer the Garmin mostly because of it's ability to upload data to your computer and having map data (I have the footpod for the Suunto only). While the Suunto was easy to read and use, the data sat on my watch all the time. Besides there are too many accessories to buy for the Suunto...foot pod, gps pod, data link for your computer, etc. With the Garmin it's all built in. The update to the 310XT solves one of my issues with the 305 allowing you to wirelessly sync data with your computer. I also had problems with the Suunto screen scratching. The Garmin has fallen off my bike during a race and doesn't have any scratches on it. Both have attachments for the bike.
But, I'm slowly switching to using Run.gps on my windows mobile phone. It's one less thing to carry since I like to have my phone with me anyway when I'm out for a long ride or run. With a set of bluetooth headphones, I can listen to music, answer important calls, and have gps keeping track of where I am. It has the Nike plus feature of updating you over the headphones with your time, speed and distance information. Plus, having audio cues and access to downloaded maps keeps me from getting lost on new routes. In all, it's a pretty complete running companion and well worth the price. I'm sure there are iphone and symbian equivalents out there. It even has live tracking which makes me feel better that people will be able to find my bones after I get run off the road out in the boonies. You will have to buy a bluetooth HRM belt if you want heart data. They have several compatible models linked on their website.
But whichever one you choose, download SportTracks. It's freeware that does a much better job of storing your training information than anything else out there.

I have a Garmin 405 with foot pod and HRM. Thus far I have been happy with it. I use it mainly for the pace, tempo and speed. I have read several reviews that claim the time to acquire a GPS signal is too long, but I don't notice any real difference from the TomTom we got for rental cars. The only downside is the touch bezel, which can be difficult with sweaty fingers. I upload runs to the Garmin site - which I am a little less happy with. It may be possible, but I have found a way to compare two runs side-by-side. As a Mac user, however, I believe its the only option out there.
