The best multivitamins to take are NOT "one-a-days" from stores. There is simply too much packed into a pill and it cannot be absorbed into your body. Also, more and more tests show that these large companies aren't putting in what they say they are.
Buy from a reputable source (swansonvitamins.com is one of the tops plus they are very inexpensive) and try to buy individual vitamin supplements. If you buy one vitamin take Swanson's multi. EVERY body also needs magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and essential fatty acids. It sounds like a lot but this is what I do, study vitamins.
Finally, the number one thing to remember when taking vitamins is to take them with food. All vitamins need the fat from a full stomach to be absorbed into your body.

In response to everything that has been said, talk to your doctor about the vitamins that you will be taking. Also so that you are getting your money's worth; if you take too much a some vitamins (vitamin B complex for example) then you just piss them out, essentially pissing money away.
You don't need to be taking 1000's of milligrams of any vitamins, that's just over kill not needed at all. Below is a website that tells you just some of the water soulable vitamins. It also tells you some symptoms of taking to many mg's of certain vitamins.

But before you do anything go and talk to your doctor or physician about any and all mulit-vitamins that you may start taking.
I take the MLB sponsored OneaDay. Mostly because they were on sale. Find a cheap one with B-complex and maybe some Vit. C&D and you'll be fine (unless you have an iron deficiency or something specific)
It's almost more important to be taking fish oils and calcium though, so i'd actually recommend getting those first. And see if you can find fish oils that don't have mercury, or atleast claim to test for it.
mercury bad. omega 3's good.

Probably not the response you're looking for, but multivitamins aren't all that they're cracked up to be. Unless you're nutrient deficient, you're better off sticking to just D and B12 supplements (and D especially). Your doctor (meaning Wikipedia or WebMD) will be able to suggest dosages.
