Reading a lot of these answers makes me cringe.... When it comes to protein , honestly you are just buying the brand label when it comes to price. Myself being a seasoned amateur body builder and power lifter it does not matter at all, there is no "best" in protein powder at all. I have tried everything and the results don't differ much at all. The only way protein powders can really ever shine to their full potential is if you are getting the majority of your protein from solid foods, adequate rest, and not over training in the gym. It is really as simple as that. As Jay Cutler says , eat, sleep, and train hard. No secrets. If you are trying to pack in a significant poundage of muscle mass remember 1 gram of protein per pound of body mass then add anywhere from 10-20 grams extra for the poundage you wanna gain. Lets say you weigh 200 pounds and are shooting to hit around gaining 5 pounds of muscle mass. Then you need at minimum in a day 210-220 grams of protein in your diet, i would only suggest getting maybe at the most 50 grams of this in shakes, your body digests liquids a lot more differently than it digests solids, you get a lot more from solid foods than liquid. I personally use GNC's brand just because i know the managers and they hook me up. I went off on a rant only because when it comes down to protein powders it really does not matter at all. Don't go into some supp shop asking for what the best is and come out with a 250+ dollar bill. This is the truth , period bro. Best of luck in the gym, and sorry for the rant :)

I stick with Optimum Whey - adding in glutamine or creatine with some bcaas and such for pre and post. Syntha 6 had some bad results to my instestines. You want to be sure you are taking in the proper quantities per day as well as not taking in too much as once as your body can only handle so much. More than 25 grams at a time can be difficult for your body to digest, creating intestinal issues (read: GAS) and the protein not being used efficiently, (read: can turn to fat). As simon states above, real food is ALWAYS best.

I'm a fan of Optimum Nutrition products. They generally have the highest protein and lowest sugar and carb counts. The chocolate flavors are definitely better than the vanillas when mixed with water.

I use 4 different powders just to mix it up, and take about 2-3 shakes a day (I lift 5-6 days a week).

In the mornings I do 1 scoop of Pro Complex with 1 Scoop of Oats & Whey (good carbs in the morning). If I take a lunchtime shake it's usually Whey or Pro Complex alone.
Post-workout I use Hydro Whey.

Also, I mix in 1 heaping teaspoon of Glutamine into each shake I take.

Ill open by saying simon otero's answer is something to read! Great response....with that said, my personal choices are:

O.N Protein is well known, well priced, variety of flavors, and tastes pretty good. Its been a top selling product on bodybuilding and im sure other sites/stores...

but its not the only way to go, as someone mentioned

BSN Syntha 6 is great tasting, well known, good(but smaller) selection of flavors, but costs a bit more. It definitely is another solid choice.

NOW Whey Protein NOW is a company that makes good all natural products at reasonable prices, their protein is no different. While not as tasty as the previous two, its a good low budget protein.

I agree with simon otero, but with one caveat...

Protein powder is protein powder, for the most part. The marginal advantage you get from spending a lot more on some exotic protein is going to be tiny.

However, taste does matter. It's easier to stay on track nutritionally if you find something you actually like to drink.

Syntha-6 is pretty tasty. Better than Muscle Milk, in my opinion. It has a fairly high carb content. But then again, it tastes good even mixed with water. (I find with lower carb proteins that don't taste good, I end up mixing with milk anyway just to choke them down -- thus adding carbs anyway.)

Nutraplanet.com is a great source for Syntha-6 and other good stuff.

I'll add to the masses by saying that I'm a big fan of Optimum Nutrition. I take their 100% whey post workout (chocolate), then their Casein before bed (vanilla).

BSN Syntha-6 is also good, but a bit pricier. For a weight gainer, I've been taking BSN True Mass and I love it. The strawberry flavor is the best protein product I've ever tasted and it's much cleaner than a lot of the other products out there loaded with all their garbage.

I've been working out now for 24 years and have taken supplements off and on during that time. First and foremost, you need to find what works best for you. Everyone's body is different and is going to react differently to not only exercise but the nutrition you put in it. I personally use a 100% Whey Protein Isolate that has no carbs or added fat. I won't mention the brand because that's not important. What is important is that I am taking it immediately after working out because that is when my muscles are most receptive to the protein and isolate has a faster uptake. Again. Try a few out and see what works for you. If you're looking to bulk up then something with fat and carbs in it probably won't bother you. If you're looking to build just lean muscle then shop for the brands without those things added. Best of luck to you and remember, better form is always better than heavy weight.

Yeah, like that guy said, listen to Jay Cutler. Eat, sleep, juice, and train hard. When you're looking around for protein just make sure you pay attention to the numbers. How many scoops are per serving, how many grams of protein per serving, and how many servings per container. For example, one might say it has 80 servings, but you may only be getting half of the protein per serving as one that says it has 40 servings. Also, if you're going to be drinking it at times other than just pre and post workout, find something with all around proteins in it, whey, egg, and casein. If you drink one of those before bed it will take longer to digest, giving you a nice drawn out recovery period.

Protein shakes vary by quite a bit. The more expensive ones tend to be more refined, and have added benefits. Listen to what Simon Otero advised too. Protein wise, the thing that I would watch out for is SOY protein. Stay away from this as it has shown to increase estrogen levels in men and women. And if your body turns out to be sensitive to estrogen, well, you're in for a world of change (physical changes). I personally read the labels on the food that I buy and try to take in as little of it as I can. It is almost impossible to stay away from this SOY protein since it is a very cheap protein to obtain, which is why it is in so many different foods. I would also advise on taking in enough vitamins so that you can efficiently break down the protein ingested and build lean muscles.
