I was told that earphones should not be wrapped 'round the MP3 player to avoid strain on the cable and plug.
For $3-5 bucks the AppleCore is one of the best little storage devices out there. I use them for my headphones, computer cables, iPhone docking cradle cable, etc. Inexpensive, easy to use and sturdy.
1) Do the "live long and prosper" vulcan salute with your hand.
2) Starting with the headphone part, start raveling your headphones in a figure-8 pattern (crossing between your index/middle fingers and your ring finger/pinky). This prevents any knots from forming when you have to unravel it for your next use.
3) With the last few inches, tie it all into a knot to make it stay.
I saw this link on reddit.com a while ago and have used it ever since.
Some of the more expensive headphones will come with a carrying case. I have a pair of Nixon Wire Headphones which came with a case- It fits in my pocket (or bag) really well and no clutter at all.
I would honestly ignore the whole thing about "strain on cable and plug." If you are dropping less than $15 on a pair of headphones, they are replaceable. However, if you really like your headphones, Jeremy's "live long and prosper" method works well.

Quite honestly, you can feel free to wrap the cable around the device, as long as you (a) ensure you're doing so loosely and uniformly (so as not to stretch or twist the cable too much) and (b) pay special attention to stay loose near the jack (so as not to detach it inadvertently). If the sleeve near the plug in is bending, you're doing it too tightly.
I agree with Matt, I have recently been using the "AppleCore"http://www.AppleCore.com for all my cables. It comes in three sizes for different types and sizes of cables. The small one works perfect for my headphones and I have found I can keep it attached to the cord while in use to pick up any extra slack in the cable.
wrap them around your hand then throw them in your pocket, they will always get tangled but its a question of how tangled they are.
I keep my Seinheiser buds in a circular mint case. Loosely wrap them around your fingers, slip them off, and drop them in. You can use 3 or 4 fingers depending on how big the tin is. They might end up a little tangled, but there's no strain and they're just short off bullet-proof.

I usually fold the length of the head phones in half and then I do it one or two more times until its about 4 inches long and tie it in to a some what tight knot, but not too tight that it puts any strain on the headphones.
Works great for me and fits in my pocket. Easy to do, easy to pull out, and I never have to untangle them.
