I did a lot of research on your question. I wanted the Petunia pickle bottom Scout but when it came down to choosing it was just too expensive. I went with the L.L. Bean diaper bag and so far it has been great. The wife went with the Columbia messenger bag from babies r us and I have to admit it is just as good if not better when using a stroller. (It has stroller straps that attach to the handles). If you have the cash just go for whatever bag you want (preferably any of the ones featured here on Uncrate) and fill in the changing pad and wipes case accessories later. Any of these options are fine or good enough and more importantly just love the kid and be there for them. You could just carry kid stuff in a plastic bag and still be an awesome parent.

Ian hit the nail on the head. I've actually found myself using an old Mountainsmith lumbar pack as a diaper bag, my original Timbuk2 large messenger bag for weekend-trip diaper bag duty, and a recycled plastic grocery bag for a quick trip out. It doesn't matter what you carry it in as long as you're well prepared. The market seems to think that we (as Dads) will pay top dollar for non-girly diaper bags, and we've perpetuated that by going along with it. The bags listed here have excellent features (I love the checklist in the Diaper Dude bags and have just added one to my Amazon wishlist as we're expecting #2 this Summer), but in reality, they're all just bags.

SkipHop Via Messenger in a non-girly color. It has everything that a new Dad needs, and nothing else, unlike the huge Vera Bradly bag the wife chooses to carry.

I use the same bag my wife uses for our baby daughter. What's the point in having a second bag? Wifey always has the essentials already packed. In my case, it's a pink Gola messenger bag. Lucky me ;-)

I picked up one of these Diaper Bag Jacket for my brother. He loves it, holds everything he needs and keeps his hands free. I'll be getting him the vest once it warms up some more.

I just have a plain black columbia diaper bag, it's unobtrusive and works well, although just about any messenger bag will work.

A regular backpack doesn't work because you need to be able to put it on while holding your kid with your other arm and need both hands free afterwards.

If you really need a uber masculine bag you can go with a maxpedition versipack, and yes, you can get a built in holster for your glock and still carry enough diapers, snacks and wet wipes to make it to your exfil retrieval point.

Chrome bags makes high quality, damn near indestructible messenger bags, many are waterproofed from the inside out - all the other dads will be jealous of your sweet-ass, roll-top, waterproof bag. And when you're done with daddy duty, you still have a pack that will last you until you hand it down to your kid.
