If you do wear dog tags, make sure you either are A) in the military or B) had or have a dear friend or family member in one of the five branches. Wearing dog tags with an Affliction shirt does not make you a badass...I regret to inform you. Wear dog tags with pride and give them the honor they rightfully deserve.
Same with religious medallions. And I am not talking about oversized crosses and Virgin Mary's all blinged out in rhinestones or diamonds. A religious medallion should be worn with respect and should not be oversized to the point where you earn the nickname "Flavor Flav." I like seeing a nice gold or silver chain with a symbol of that person's faith being worn but keep it tasteful.
Here is another that can kind-of go along with religious medallions. You can wear different necklaces that relate to your ethnicity. For example, my uncle wears a gold chain with a Corno (Italian red horn amulet) on it because he is Italian. His father gave it to him.
There are so many different kinds of necklaces to wear. As a surfer, I wear a lot of puka shells, shark teeth, Moari hooks, St. Christopher medallions etc. I am a fan of hemp necklaces with blown glass pieces worked into the material too. But there is a time and place for these necklaces. Save them for when you are beachside wearing boardshorts and sipping a Pina Colada.
I think you get the picture. I think it's cool for guys to wear necklaces especially because it shows they are not worried that they would look like a girl wearing "jewelry." Use good judgment. You know who looks like a tool and who doesn't when it comes to necklaces...don't let it be you.

In my opinion, you can't.
The only exceptions are dog tags (if you're actually in the military) and religious symbols (if you're actually religious).
Maybe you could get by wearing a wedding ring on a chain, but thats pushing it (especially if you still have your fingers)
Anything else and you look like a tool.
Most anything from Teno will look nice on a guy. The ceramic/steel pendants on the rubber chains are really clean and simple.
Sharktooth necklace like this one from Hawaii, http://www.da808style.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=361

what about the hanger 3 subway tokens that were posted a year or so ago? those are pretty simple and I have never seen anyone with them.
Wear something thats meaningful to you, eg. I have a pendant my grandmother gave me before she died and i turned it into a necklace.
Anything else will def. make you look like a douche. Especially if your doing it to "match" your style.
Checkout a Chrome Hearts store or reseller. They have very cool/hip stuff. The store in Vegas is the best. Just Google Chrome Hearts.

I second the subway token necklaces. I have that one and i really like it.
In my opinion, if you're wearing some neck wear, it belongs inside your collar. If it shakes its way out, that is fine, but I wouldnt make an effort to match anything. That being said, the only time I let my necklace fly is my Phiten, and really only when I am just hanging out. (dressed with no specific plans or intentions) or playing some kind of sport. Phitens are also nice if you are in good shape because when they sit outside your shirt on your collar, they contrast with your trap muscles and provide a starker line.
good luck.
I totally agree... There are no necklaces for grown up men without looking and being a douche. I agree with the exception of a Military dog tag other than that even if you think you look "cool" with the necklace you don't, even if your girlfriend say's you look good with a necklace you don't and men will peg you as a total douche/wifebeater/a**hole. Probably why most men that wear necklaces end up divorced. Necklaces on men are so dumb, stupid and also men that wear their shirts with the 3rd and 4th button open also looks stupid and lame.
