I'm looking for a pair that are knee-length with zippered pockets to keep stuff in during physical activities.
I would recommend the Omni-Dry from Columbia. This seems like it will fit the bill of what you're looking for a little more appropriately than a standard boardshort. Quick dry material, and plenty of pocket space. They're also active fit, so if you gain or drop a little weight, they'll work with you. Columbia has a long history of quality products.
If you've never had cargo short swim trunks then make sure you buy one with lots of drainage in the pockets. There is NOTHING worse than trying to hop out of the pool with your pockets full of huge bags of water! And without good drainage, you'll look like a human water fountain.
