I don't want a globe or a classroom type map that I would be embarrassed to have hanging -- I am looking for a nice map that would look great in an office.
When I worked for one of the numerous international organizations, we only had Swiss Kummerly&Frey maps hanging in the halls. They've got a sort of cool understated realpolitik feeling to them, definitely very professional and look great in an office. So if you're interested in looking like you work at the World Bank or the IMF, check out their 1:23000000 world map, it's excellent:

Get a map that represents area accurately, or orients South up. It will tickle your mind and correct misconceptions about the world. For example, Africa is fourteen times larger than Greenland.
National Geographic has a lot of different maps, many of them look vintage/classy, and they have custom ones as well.
best maps I've seen...especially the giant 2m x 1m world map
I've always liked Ikea's Large World Map
It's old fashioned looking, and bloody huge!
Raven Maps. have had the world map hanging in our family dining room, and it continues to start many conversations.
Did extensive research before buying, and found this one both well designed (clear, well labeled, good visual distinctions, excellent level of detail, useful), as well as aesthetically pleasing.
Comes either ready to frame or mount, or fully laminated, which can still be framed, or used as is.
Friends,
The man is not looking for an atlas map. He is looking for an ancient map from days of yore. That is the only type of map that is worthy of one's wall. Any other, then indeed, his wall will look like Miss Goodrich's Geography class.
Find yourself an ancient map. Better yet, put off the map quest and pick a up history book. There are many famous maps/projections of the Earth that have been made over the centuries. Find something of significance and track a copy down.
