Well, I punched in a trip from LA to New York and was able to book a Mustang Convertible from Hertz (the Corvettes weren't available for the trip, probably due to distance). I set the time for 8 days. That gives you about 6 hours of driving per day, and the rest is just time you can screw around.
It's gonna cost you about 1700 bucks for a one way trip. If you want to take a more leisurely drive, say 2 weeks, it'll run you just over 2800 bucks. Once you factor in gas, food, hotels, (alcohol?) etc. it's gonna end up costing you close to 4 grand for the trip. Even more if you need to get back home (plane/train ticket).
Not exactly how I'd spend 4 grand, but to each their own.
Depends on how sporty you want to go. If something like an Infiniti G37, Volvo S60/C70, Mustang, or Camaro works for you, then you might want to try Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
They recently merged with National and Alamo and have integrated their fleet to allow one-way rentals free of charge. A close friend works for Enterprise and set me up with a Dodge Challenger from New Jersey to New Orleans; the fee was no more than a standard rental.
If you desire something even sportier than that, I'm assuring you have a little more money to spend, and you might want to look at Gotham or Vulcan if you reside in the Northeast. Both car clubs offer luxury vehicles, albeit at ludicrous prices, but last I checked they freight a lot of their cars, so I can't imagine your situation to pose a problem to them.
There is a rental place in L.A. called Midway that rents 700 series BMW's and had an Audi R8 in the lot the last time i was in. I've rented more conventional vehicles from them and had no problems. Midway
go to a dealer and work something out, get a nice AMG on a short term lease, or in greenwich, CT or santa barbara, CA that do renting of sports cars, that should cover both coasts
Hertz. They offer Corvettes as well as the Mustang Hertz Shelby GT-H.

Hertz rents the Ford Mustang Shelby. I don't know if they'll let you drive it cross-country, though.
For the price of renting a high-end car to drive cross country (assuming lots of stops, what, two weeks?), maybe consider instead buying something really cool, like an old Datsun Z and driving that.
