If you're looking for a single locale, Fort Worth, TX is my recommendation for a reasonable trip that offers a lot of character and great golf.
You'll get more play, food, booze, and twang for the money than probably anywhere else. The city is one of country's best secrets right now.
DON'T MOVE HERE!
There are hundreds of courses within an hour drive and the majority of the golf here is very very cheap. The terrain is also varied from course to course.
Recommendations:
Canyon West - in country, will amaze you
Tour 18 - 18 holes modeled from the best in golf
Hawk's Creek - fighter jets
TOPGOLF - GO TO TOPGOLF
Split Rail - links in the middle of nowhere
Tierra Verde
Texas Star
Cowboys - yes, they play there all the time
Iron Horse
(All Public)
If the weather isn't good, wait five minutes.
My favorite place for golf that provides quality courses and is reasonably priced is the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Alabama.
The trail starts at the top of the state, at Hampton Cove in Huntsville and wends it way down the state stopping at a total of 11 courses, ultimately terminating at Magnolia Grove in Mobile on the Gulf coast. Most of the courses have at least 36 holes and many of the courses having 56 holes. Also many of the courses have a 9 or 18 hole par-3 course.
The courses are reasonabley priced - Grand National costs from $45 to $64, depending on the time of year. And this is for a course ranked number 1 by Golf Digest readers in 2009. All the courses have hotels nearby, again reasonably priced.
I used to live in Memphis and would rent a van and my friends and I would go down fo a long weekend. We would play 36 holes a day, for 3 days. Different courses each day, and definitely with one of the rounds being on a par-3 course. Writing about it made me realize it has been too long. Perhaps this Spring, I will get the guys together and we will do it again. I would fly into Atlanta, and two hours later, meet the rest of the group in Opelika where we would play Grand National.
Go to their website (see below) and read all about it, including package deals.

Go to Myrtle in the beginning of the offseason, September. Weather is great, courses are cheap, NY Prime is an unbelievable steakhouse, and there's a Martin's golf shop on every corner for the guy who forgot to bring his golf shoes.
I'm from Naples, FL originally and I can say they have the most courses in a town I have ever seen. Last I counted there were over a 100, and the majority are incredible. It may not be the cheapest place for a golf vacation, but it is worth it. Just do your research and plan ahead and you can make any location affordable. Plus it's got a quality beach at that.

Im planning my bach party in Scottsdale around a golf weekend with the guys. Reasonably affordable depending on the time of the year. Rates drop in half late May and into June. The give on that time is the heat but early tee times work great.
Some of the best courses in the US are there - and plenty of them to try out.
