Where are the best things to do and places to go in a trip around the world?
New Zealand
Australia
Thailand
Beijing
India
Nepal
South Africa
Morocco
Germany (to coincide with Oktoberfest)
London
Scuba Dive in Iceland
Rio de Janeiro
Buenos Aires
Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia)
Europe:
As cliche as it sounds, Paris is a beautiful city to explore. London also has a lot of charm. Brussels, Belgium is smaller, but seems more friendly. (Belgian waffles from street vendors here are amazing - absolutely nothing like "Belgian" waffles in the US.) Like Mark said, Venice is like no other city out there - it's a maze of history, art, and bizarreness all wrapped up in a tiny set of man-made islands.
No matter where you go, take time to walk around between "destinations" and find places that aren't in the guidebook. Ask the locals. Watch people. Just let things happen instead of planning everything out. Never trust a restaurant within photographic range of a major tourist attraction.
Places high on my list to go next: New Zealand, Japan, Ireland, Cairo, and Brazil.
I think National Geographic's "Places of a Lifetime" expedition has a lot of good suggestions:
Places of a Lifetime
Some of the highlights of that trip are Angkor Wat, The Great Wall, the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, Petra, Istanbul.
A few places I'd add:
Tikal, Guatemala
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Iguazu Falls
Tokyo, Japan
Benares, India
Kathmandu, Nepal (and the Himalayas)
The islands of southern Thailand
Victoria Falls
Lalibela, Ethiopia
Cairo, Egypt
the Alhambra, Spain
Really it depends what you want in travel and what you like but based on my personal travels I can tell you that these places are the ones I would go (or go back to) for sure:
New Zealand: Amazing natural features and activities and some of the nicest, good natured people I've met. Amazing variety of landscape.
Japan: Be prepared to spend a lot of cash. It is however one of those places that is really cool to experience at least once. Language is tough to learn.
Spain: If you are a "foodie" you have to go to Spain. You will find some of the best things to eat in the world. Also they have nice beaches and other beautiful attractions.
Amsterdam: Yeah, Yeah, cliche but it is a cool place to start in Europe and you can get to a lot of other places in Europe from there and you should.
Venice: It seems like a place you need to see at least once before you die.
Australia: Everyone I've met from there makes me want to go there. My friends that have been there also enjoyed it very much. Beaches, surf, party, and scenery that you can't find anywhere else.
Ecuador: I know some people that live in Cuenca and the videos and photos are unbelievable. I plan on visiting next year. There are some great attractions and food and beautiful cities. Also "rainforest"/"eco" experiences.
I grew up in Hawaii (also a great place to see at least once) and traveled consistently. I highly recommend reading and studying up on the "real/local" attractions and you should stay far away from major tourist areas. Try and meet some locals and ask them what to do as well. There are also a ton of travel shows that you can watch online if you need help deciding on a particular location and they usually give some decent tips on what to stay away from. Good Travels!
If I was able to have an all expenses paid trip around the world I would check out the following:
All of Great Britain, especially London
Attu, Alaska
Denali, Alaska
Dutch Harbor, Alaska
McMurdo Station, Antarctica
Teahupo'o, Tahiti
Victoria, B.C., Canada
Banff National Park, B.C., Canada
Paris, France
Tibet
Japanese countryside
Mentawi Islands
Easter Island
The Great Barrier Reef
Amsterdam
Cape of St. Francis, Africa
Cairo, Egypt
Brussels
Moscow, Russia
The North Pole
*I have toured most of Italy but this is a place I would never get sick of and could visit over and over again. Italy is its own category.
Yeah I know, my list is quite extensive but hey, I can dream right?

I agree with many of the spots above, but I think trying to see as many of the World Wonders is a good place to start and then add to those.
I was able to see Machu Picchu back in late October/early November and it was amazing.
To see the Great Pyramid would be, I'm sure, equally amazing.
Victoria Falls.
Paris.
Rome.
Scotland.
The Great Wall in China.
The Great Barrier Reef of Australia.
New Zealand.
Japan.
I signed up for this site just to answer this question:
Iceland.
Easily one of the most beautiful countries I've ever seen (and I live in Canada, so that's saying something). Amazing people, fairly good food, and if you go in the summer, the sun barely sets.
Plus the bars are open til 6am on weekends.
Look up Gulfoss or Thingvellir National Park if you don't believe me. I spent a week there and the experience changed my life.
Normandy Beach. I have never been there and have always wanted to go. I can only imagine the feelings one could experience in walking the footsteps of our Grandfathers during the most destructive conflict of our time. To stand at the water line, looking towards the blasted out German bunkers, and trying to imagine what those men and boys experienced would be a defining moment in anyone's life.
I really enjoyed Argentina and plan to go back often. Iguazu Falls, Buenos Aires, the Andes, Patagonia, Mendoza, Tiera del Fuego. It's as diverse topographically as the US and is heavily influenced by Italy and Germany.
I agree with Spain as well. If you go there, get into Andalusia and go to El Bulli. Also make it to Toledo and Sevilla.

I really liked visiting Hong Kong and Tokyo. I've also been to Rome, the Italian Riviera, Venice, Florence, Germany, Austria, and Spain. I was not a huge fan of Rome because it was dirty and beggars/thieves were everywhere. Also, I'm not big into art but seeing the Vatican City was pretty cool. I really like Venice and Florence. Venice is like no other place you can see.
I've always wanted to go to Australia as well as a couple other cities in Europe (Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, London).
