A Macintosh jacket is just the thing for business and casual attire. I went with an end of season sale Brooks Brothers Macintosh-style jacket, single breasted, tan, 3/4 length (car length), cotton, water resistant. Looks and functions great. Jcrew carries a nice authentic Macintosh coat as well.

Barbour Beaufort. This British company is over 150 years old. While only recently becoming popular in the US, it is not a trend. People in Europe have been wearing these forever. Designed for the English country life but definitely works to dress down a suit.
They are expensive but they are a long lasting, always in style jacket you can pass on to your son or grandson. Waterproof, long enough to cover your suit jacket or sportcoat. Can add zip in liners for extra warmth. There are longer versions if you need longer length.
