I hate this car. Not because it has terrible performance or lame looks — quite the contrary. I hate this car because it's making me second guess my choice of purchasing a 2006 Civic a couple of months ago. I'm pretty sure I should have waited. The all-new Volkswagen GTI Mk V (starting at $21,990) has a 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine producing 200-hp, an aggressive body and all the hatchback utility you could want. It's also got eye-catching plaid seats, a 6-disc in-dash CD changer, 32 mpg on the highway, 17-inch wheels and Xenon projector beam headlights. Early reviews say the fifth-generation GTI has all the speed, handling and class of the European version. As Volkswagen's great commercials say, the GTI is pre-tuned by German engineers.
