The BMW i8 ($136,000) provides an emphatic counterpoint to everyone out there who says a hybrid can't possibly be a fun car to drive — like it or not, this is the future. At its heart is a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, capable of generating 231 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. That power is delivered to the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. Up front an electric engine generates additional horsepower and torque, boosting the figures to 362 and 320 respectively. It'll get up to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds, all while maintaining an average fuel economy of 94 mpg (which is nothing short of unbelievable). Oh, and the swan-winged coupe is absolutely gorgeous, but we didn't have to tell you that.
As if the Ford GT wasn't incredible enough off the factory line, the guys at Galpin Auto Sports went and made it into a truly-modern super car, the Galpin Ford GTR1 ($1,024,000). Based on the GT's original chassis, the GTR1 has been completely reworked, from the restyled carbon fiber body, to the obscenely-powerful engine. The mid-mounted 5.4-liter V8 engine sports twin turbochargers, and an output of 1,024 horsepower and 739 lb-ft of torque — all that power mixed with a weight of only 3,000 pounds means it can hit over 225 mph, 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds, and 100 mph in 6.8 seconds. A nearly-perfect weight distribution of 51/49 and carbon ceramic brakes help it handle as well as it moves, and a limited run of only six cars make it as exclusive as it is fast.
Everyone's favorite Italian sports car has just gotten a lot easier to love, as the Ferrari 458 Speciale ($TBA). This re-imagining of the original features Ferrari's most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 to date — a 4.5-liter engine that produces 596 horsepower (up from 562 in its predecessor) and 398 lb-ft of torque. With all that power, it'll push to 62 mph in a flat three seconds, and 124 mph in just over nine. Responsive aerodynamic panels help it handle at high speed, a Side Slip angle Control system gives it intelligent control through turns, and specially-designed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tires give it the best response time and highest lateral acceleration of any Ferrari.
If you're concerned that your Ferrari 458 isn't quite powerful enough — we feel your pain — fret not, the Hennessey HPE700 Twin Turbo Ferrari 458 ($293,000) is here to give you a few more of those much-needed ponies (170 more, to be exact). The heart of this upgrade, sitting beneath custom-made carbon-fiber covers, are two low-inertia, ball-bearing turbochargers operating at a maximum seven psi of boost, and producing a staggering total of 738 hp and 532 lb-ft of torque. They also throw in professional installation, dyno tuning, road testing, an air-to-water intercooler system, new lines, pipes, and Hennessey exterior badging so everyone knows what you're pushing.
When you need a ride that's as race-ready as it is street-legal, then the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse ($TBA) is the only choice. With a 570-horsepower V10 engine, this supercar rockets to 104 mph in just 10.4 seconds, and tops out at an incredible 199 mph. A carbon fiber rear wing produces plenty of downforce to keep it glued to the ground, while carbon-ceramic brakes help stop its minimal 2,954 pounds. The interior — which speaks to its racing heritage — is decked out in carbon fiber and Alcantara, for a refined, yet minimalist aesthetic.
