Caldera House

Hidden among the native grasses and Emory oaks in the San Rafael Valley of Southern Arizona, the Caldera House offers a modern refuge in a primitive setting. The exterior walls are constructed from a mix of red scoria, a pulverized lava rock, cement, and water creating a facade that gets lost in its rocky landscape. The interior is just 945 square feet, consisting of just an open living area with fireplace and bedroom. Separated from the main house by a wall of glass and metal, a Zaguan allows for a covered outdoor space that can also be used for additional sleeping. A large set of folding metal doors on either end open up to let in natural light and take advantage of views of the valley scenery and the Patagonia Mountains.

  • MA House

Located just outside of Mexico City, the MA House was completely designed around its surrounding environment. The home's stone facade was influenced by its local availability, as well as its low-cost and maintenance-free nature. The material also makes its way into the interior, complimented by floors, ceilings, and fixtures cast from concrete. At the heart of the home, the three forms that make up the structure meet to create a pair of covered patios overlooking a large courtyard where occupants can take advantage of the area's warm climate and lush scenery. The sloping nature of these volumes pair with north and south-facing glazing, allowing for full views of the mountain landscape, while concealing neighboring houses to the east and west.

  • E20 House

Set in a sloping meadow in Pliezhausen, Germany, the E20 House allows its concrete exterior to show through without overwhelming the minimal interior. The home is hexagonal, allowing for a room layout that lends itself to eye-catching reveals. Warm wood floors and cabinets pair with white walls and exposed gray concrete to give the interior a cozy yet distinctly modern feel, while abundant windows let in plenty of natural light while providing views to the outdoors.
