Tipping Cube

Imagine balancing on the peak of Pic-Saint-Loup in southern France, taking in views as far out as the Mediterranean. Architect Christophe Benichou has visualized this dream-like scenario with his Tipping Cube concept. Accessed by a set of stairs, the viewing platform is encased by a leaning boxed structure made from a perforated roof — providing a needed break from the sun — and a set of opaque sides that force your attention forward to a large opening. This setup creates a 360-degree panorama that stretches from the surrounding Montpellier mountains, out past the Cévennes, and to the sea ahead.

  • Coodo Mobile Shelter

Sometimes you love your house, but a better job or better view may take you somewhere else. With its minimally invasive installation, the Coodo Mobile Shelter is made to move. Each frame is a rounded square, constructed from heavy glass and features folding floor-to-ceiling glazing in the main living area. From there, you can customize the interior with the colors, fabrics, and details you desire. Coodos aren't just limited to residential living. With 11 models and expandable options, these versatile units can be used for offices, guest houses, wellness retreats, or weekend getaways.

  • Caldera House

Hidden among the native grasses and Emory oaks in the San Rafael Valley of Southern Arizona, the Caldera House offers a modern refuge in a primitive setting. The exterior walls are constructed from a mix of red scoria, a pulverized lava rock, cement, and water creating a facade that gets lost in its rocky landscape. The interior is just 945 square feet, consisting of just an open living area with fireplace and bedroom. Separated from the main house by a wall of glass and metal, a Zaguan allows for a covered outdoor space that can also be used for additional sleeping. A large set of folding metal doors on either end open up to let in natural light and take advantage of views of the valley scenery and the Patagonia Mountains.
