It's not easy being a hard rock fan these days. Much of the genre has become dominated by unintelligible screaming laid over endlessly repeating riffs, while another sub-sect has descended into popish hell. But hope isn't lost. Diamond Eyes by Deftones ($13) is a terrific example of rock done right, with heavy, melodic guitars mixing with the equal parts smooth and frightening voice of Chino Moreno, subtly-employed atmospheric keyboards, and drumming that doesn't need double-bass trickery to be effective. Feel free to listen, with no threat of inducing a riot or growing a vagina.
