Houdini: The Movie Star
Everybody wants to be a movie star. Even Harry Houdini. The escape artist starred in a handful of thrillers, which are now available for the first time on DVD, along with some rare historical footage. Houdini: The Movie Star ($35) is a 3-disc set that includes The Master Mystery (1919), Terror Island (1920), The Man From Beyond (1922), Haldane of the Secret Service (1923), and The Grim Game (1919). Unless you like crappy silent films, however, the special features are probably going to be your favorite. You get filmed records of several Houdini escapes (1907-1923), an audio recording of Houdini speaking (1914), excerpts from the NY Censor Board files, and the Metamorphosis illusion performed by Houdini's brother Hardeen.
