Sony 42-inch XBR Plasma HDTV

Sony 42-inch XBR Plasma HDTV

We love playing our video games on an DLP projection set, but if you want to look fly in the bedroom, you keep your Mario stash elsewhere. For places where movies and TV rule, look into the 42" XBR Plasma WEGA HDTV (Model No. KDE-42XBR950) from Sony ($8000). Yes, it’s expensive — but it’s also one of the sexiest plasma sets we’ve ever seen, and sports multiple built-in HDTV tuners — something we can’t say (unfortunately) for our 50” DLP Panasonic.

  • Philips 50-inch Plasma HDTV with Ambilight

If you haven’t heard by now, flat, hang-on-your-wall TVs are an almost must have when it comes to gadgetry status. Philips decided to take this phenomena one step further with their Ambilight technology that emits a glow around the sides of the TV, the color of which always matches what’s on the TV. The 50PF9966 50" Plasma HDTV from Philips ($4,500) features Ambilight, a 3000:1 contrast ratio, and a native resolution of 1366 x 768 — more than enough to make your bootlegged Star Wars Episode III DVD look good.

  • Sony 50-inch Grand WEGA 3LCD HDTV

Sony has once again shown why it's king with its latest 50-inch Grand WEGA HDTV, the KDF-E50A10 ($1,350). The new model features a sleek design that does away with the old "speakers on the side" look by using "invisible" speakers hidden at the bottom of the set. So that means, in addition to having a minimal bezel and looking more plasma-like, the 50-inch model can now fit in an a space that previously housed a 42-inch television. The KDF-E50A10 (way to go on the catchy name there, Sony) offers a 1280 x 720 native 720p resolution and Sony's Cinema Black Pro technology for excellent contrast. A 42-inch little brother, the KDF-E4210, is also being released. It'll fit in a space the size of a normal 36-inch model.
