Synecdoche, New York

The latest epic from Charlie Kaufman, the academy award nominated writer of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, Synecdoche, New York ($20 DVD; $28 Blu-ray) tells the story of Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman), an aging theater director suffering from a mysterious autonomic disorder. Sounds uplifting. But surprisingly, Hoffman and an ensemble cast make it work, creating a story that is intriguing and characters that are somehow more real because of their unreal nature, drawing you right in to this compelling Kaufman-style alternate reality.
