The War
If you're not able to catch all seven parts of this historic masterpiece on TV, do yourself a favor and order the The War on DVD ($85; Oct. 2). Directed and produced by the legendary Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, this amazing 15-hour film, which was six years in the making, tells the story of World War II and how it affected the lives of an entire nation. As expected, the documentary is top-notch, with gobs of never-before-seen footage and voice work from the likes of Tom Hanks, Alan Arkin, and Samuel L. Jackson. The DVD adds a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, extensive commentaries, and a companion book, The War: An Intimate History ($30).
