Faking Nature

What you see in a documentary isn't always what happened. Like any other film, the magic is in the editing. Since animals aren't actors, a performance can't be caught on demand — it takes weeks, months, or even years to get what you're there to film. And shooting wild animals means putting a safe distance between you and your subject, which means the sound is often added in post production. DLSRguide examines how nature documentaries are humanized and edited for dramatic effect, sometimes with very little bearing on what happens in the field.
