2011 Ford Explorer

One might question the sanity of buying a full-size SUV in an age of crossovers and ever-higher gas prices, but for those that really need the... utility, the 2011 Ford Explorer ($28,200 and up) looks mighty nice. Powered by either a 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine good for 237hp or a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine with 290hp, the new Explorer offers impressive fuel economy, as well as a six-speed automatic transmissions, intelligent four-wheel drive electric power-assisted steering, the MyFord Touch and SYNC systems, and a new weight saving design. Not included is a shield to deflect all the eco-hate being thrown your way for driving around in such a conspicuously large vehicle.

  • Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

We don't know a whole lot about Land Rover's new Range Rover Evoque ($TBA), but we do know this: it's a damn fine-looking crossover. We also know it's based on the LRX concept, will come with four-wheel-drive, three doors, and will be the lightest, most fuel efficient Range Rover ever when it hits American shores next Fall. We also suspect you'd best start saving your Benjamins now, because we're guessing that the Evoque will cost just a bit more than your average Kia.

  • Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break

Sometimes concept cars are just that — concepts meant to allow the company's designers and engineers the equivalent of work-sponsored recess. Other times, they offer glimpses at future models, like the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break (Yes, not brake). Sporting a bold new look it will undoubtedly share with the new four-door CLS, the Shooting Break features a panoramic sunroof occupying most of the roof, full LED headlamps, a flat load rear floor that adds extra utility to the hatchback, frameless side windows, a twin pipe exhaust system, a full-length wood console, and 20-inch sterling silver (!) wheels. Powerplants will range from a 300hp, turbocharged V6 to a turbocharged, 5.5L V8 pumping out 563hp, which will hopefully make you feel better about driving a six-figure station wagon.
