Half-Tree House

Partially anchored to its sloped plot and partially resting on two existing trees, the Half-Tree House is exactly what the name suggests. The structure appears to emerge from the forest floor in a horizontal manner, resting on its existing neighbors. Darkened timber cladding was provided by fallen eastern pine found on the property. The interior carries a brighter hue with white shiplap walls and natural wood floors. Nestled well within its 60-acre Upstate New York plot, the home is unreachable by vehicle, water, and electricity, relying on a wood-burning stove to provide warmth and rotating glazed panels to welcome in a breeze during the summer months.

  • Cabin on a Rock

Anchored to a granite boulder in the White Mountains, the Cabin on a Rock is a tiny take on the traditional alpine retreat. The structure balances on nine concrete footings. It's small footprint and prefab construction allowed for minimal impact to the existing landscape. A mix of timber and steel clad the exterior's asymmetrical silhouette. Wide wood planks line the interior, providing a warm contrast to the winter climate, which is on full display from the 24-foot sliding glass wall.

  • Langitangi Summerhouse

Nestled in the riverbank, the Langitangi Summerhouse adopts a rugged facade to marry with the Icelandic landscape. The home occupies a natural slope in the terrain. Concrete cladding and a gravel surface help the structure to become a part of its rocky plot. Internally, the interior is split into two spaces — the main house and a guest house. The cantilevered roof joins the two volumes, while also providing protection for an outdoor terrace. A linear layout runs parallel with the water's edge, allowing for full-height glazing to capture views of the adjacent shoreline and outlining mountains.
