Henry Moore Studios

Located on a 70-acre estate in the Hertfordshire countryside, the Henry Moore Studios is the headquarters for the artist's foundation. The charity has been run out of Henry Moore's former home for decades, providing the base for the current expansion. The refurbished house now serves as an archive of the artist's letters, books, photographs, and films, while an extension clad in oxidized steel panels houses the new library. A timber and glass pavilion creates the visitors center which includes a cafe, education space, meeting rooms, and offices. It's curved form and glazed facade gives glimpses of the grounds extensive gardens, as wells as some of Moore's infamous bronze sculptures.

  • Cape Town Tree House

Nestled in a forest of eucalyptus and oak trees, the Cape Town Tree House is influenced by its surrounding landscape. The structure is made of four steel "trunks" connected by a central square. Like the surrounding trees, the interior flows in a vertical manner, with the main living area on the first floor, a bedroom on the second, and a roof deck above. Each cylinder helps to further define the space among levels while also creating views with their glazed facade. A palette of steel and western red cedar dominate the interior and exterior, both left untreated to naturally blend into its surroundings over time.

  • Hawaii Residence

Inspired in part by the traditional architecture of the Polynesian Islands, this Hawaii Residence is a seamless blend of the modern and the local. It sits in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, where Uncrate favorites Olson Kundig imagined a series of pavilions that make up a single home. As is common on the islands, the living spaces are on the upper floors so as to provide protection from the elements and vistas of the Pacific. Lava stone is used on the ground floor to anchor the buildings visually, the interior exposes the structural beams, and a combination of movable wooden screens and operable roof flaps provide both ventilation and shade. It's finished with a long lap pool that visually connects the main home to the pool house across the yard.
