In 1 House

Part art exhibit and part architectural experiment, the In 1 House is an exploration of function and materiality. The two-story dwelling is housed in a shiny metal hanger lined with only oriented strand board. Rather than a kitchen, bedroom, or office, the interior is divided into three ambiguous spaces. Black modular furniture can be arranged to redefine each area as desired. The lack of materials and minimal use of furniture create a blank canvas, allowing function to be open for interpretation.

  • Hawaii Residence

Inspired in part by the traditional architecture of the Polynesian Islands, this Hawaii Residence is a seamless blend of the modern and the local. It sits in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, where Uncrate favorites Olson Kundig imagined a series of pavilions that make up a single home. As is common on the islands, the living spaces are on the upper floors so as to provide protection from the elements and vistas of the Pacific. Lava stone is used on the ground floor to anchor the buildings visually, the interior exposes the structural beams, and a combination of movable wooden screens and operable roof flaps provide both ventilation and shade. It's finished with a long lap pool that visually connects the main home to the pool house across the yard.

  • House by the Forest

Bordering the woods in a small village in the Czech Republic, the House by the Forest fits a contemporary interior inside its vintage shell. The home's exterior form was left in its original state, altered only by the addition of new windows and a wooden patio on the garden side. These minor modifications not only introduce the presence of natural light but also allow for new views of the scenic landscape. The interior saw a dramatic change with the removal of interior walls to create an open floor plan. A lightened timber ceiling and custom-made furniture refresh the existing attic, turning the space into a bright living area with glimpses of the neighboring treetops.
