Pines House

Tucked between a dense pine forest and the New Zealand coast, the Pines House offers a zinc-clad retreat on the Coromandel Peninsula. The front of the exterior is covered by an oversized awning that connects what appears to be two separate buildings. Corrugated zinc siding continues into the interior to further sway the illusion of independent structures occupying the same plot. A massive timber platform runs along the entire length of the residence and extends out toward the shore, creating an outdoor space to entertain among the neighboring bay.

  • Straumsnes Cabin

A combination of old and new structures, the Straumsnes Cabin is a holiday house overlooking the Norwegian Sea. Most of the original 1950's structure was removed to make room for the modern build. The timber-clad additions are a series of modules, built around the existing annex that extend out toward the coast. Along with the annex, the pool was kept and refurbished for the new project. Bedrooms are housed in their own pods for added privacy, while the master has access to its own sauna. The interior maintains a clean aesthetic with plywood-lined ceilings, a concrete fireplace, and minimal furnishing and is generously glazed for endless views of the surrounding fjord.

  • Rabbit Snare Gorge Cabin

Perched on a hill overlooking the coast of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Rabbit Snare Gorge Cabin takes its inspiration from the traditional gable roof and dormer, but stretches it vertically to make the most of the views. The single-family home was designed by Omar Gandhi Architect and NYC-based Design Base 8 as a summer getaway, with the bedroom and bath on the lower level and an open living area above that includes both the second floor and a mezzanine above, all clad in birch plywood. Windows both large and small afford great views while following the path of the sun to maximize natural lighting, and the 20 foot-tall entryway serves as a windbreak while providing contrast with the cedar exterior cladding.
