Seascape Retreat

Located on the edge of the Pacific about two hours from Christchurch, this Seascape Retreat is laid out to perfectly take advantage of the land on which it sits. Thanks to a living roof, the one-bedroom studio blends in well with the hill behind it, while walls built from locally-sourced rock help ease the transition between its surroundings and the floor-to-ceiling windows of the living, dining, and kitchen areas. Under the roof you'll also find a bedroom, bathroom, and covered patio with fireplace, while outside there's a water tank on one side and a sunken hot tub on the other.

  • Golf House

Defined by three concrete boxes stacked atop one another, the Golf House provides a striking contrast with the Buenos Aires course on which it sits. The middle floor is an open space that contains the kitchen, dining, and living areas, with an open space below the latter serving as a covered carport. The bottom floor sits perpendicular to the middle, and houses guest bedrooms and baths, while the master suite sits along the same axis at the top of the structure to maximize the views. Floor-to-ceiling windows on the upper levels let in plenty of light, and provide access to the multiple decks that provide ample outdoor living space.

  • Longbranch Cabin

You'd think that a 14-square-foot bunk house that's been expanded multiple times over decades would be a bit of an architectural disaster. But the Longbranch Cabin is no ordinary bunk house, and Jim Olson is no ordinary architect. Built in 1959, the original structure was remodeled in 1981, 1997, 2003, and 2014, each time expanding while reusing the already existing structure. The result is a series of boxes unified under a single roof, with shared modest details — like plywood sheathing and fir flooring both inside and out — that belie its talented owner and picturesque location on Puget Sound.
