Shaolin Flying Monks Temple

Levitation has been an interest of the Shaolin monks for centuries. The Shaolin Flying Monks Temple finally lets them experience it, thanks to a massive wind turbine. The turbine is surrounded by a curved amphitheater so spectators can enjoy the aerial displays, learning more about the history of Zen and Kung-Fu all while seated in a building inspired by monks' beloved Songshan mountain.

  • Broad Cove Lookout

Overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island, The Lookout at Broad Cove Marsh provides a coastal getaway with expansive views. The narrow, single-story structure runs parallel with the water, accommodating its slender cliffside plot. From the road, the home is concealed by a large concrete retaining wall, topped by a small sliver of glazing to let in the north-eastern light. In contrast to its monolithic rear, the southwest side is encased by walls of glass, affording expansive views of the seaside setting. The interior is split into two halves, the first being a set of pod-like volumes that house the bedrooms and bathrooms. The other half is occupied by a timber-clad living area, lined with floor-to-ceiling glazed doors that open the space up to the salty ocean breeze.

  • Bilateral House

Using an 116-year-old Period Revival home in Toronto as the base, the Bilateral House is part restoration and part new construction. To meet city requirements, the front half of the exterior facade retains its original charm by restoring the existing brick, replacing wood trim, and applying new stucco, while a modern extension to the rear satisfies the needs of the homeowners. The addition of black metal to both ends unites the old with the new. Although leaving subtle reminders of its former heritage, the interior truly reflects the owner's love for all things contemporary with elements of raw concrete, paired with clean, white walls to create a gallery aesthetic to display their personal collection of art and vintage furniture.
