We House

Composed of two main sections linked by a glass and wood kitchen, the We House ties together its various areas with a few smart details. Reclaimed wood from an old factory in Brooklyn is used throughout the house, most notably in the ceilings of the kitchen and bedrooms. It's mirrored in the board concrete used elsewhere in the house and complemented by steel casement windows that give the main living areas a slightly industrial feel.

  • Bilateral House

Using an 116-year-old Period Revival home in Toronto as the base, the Bilateral House is part restoration and part new construction. To meet city requirements, the front half of the exterior facade retains its original charm by restoring the existing brick, replacing wood trim, and applying new stucco, while a modern extension to the rear satisfies the needs of the homeowners. The addition of black metal to both ends unites the old with the new. Although leaving subtle reminders of its former heritage, the interior truly reflects the owner's love for all things contemporary with elements of raw concrete, paired with clean, white walls to create a gallery aesthetic to display their personal collection of art and vintage furniture.

  • Cement Factory Conversion

Renovated from the ruins of a 19th century Catalan plant, the Cement Factory Conversion is a place of both work and leisure for Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. Spread throughout the former silos, smoke stacks, underground tunnels, and machine rooms, the estate is made up of four parts — the studio, La Cathedral, the gardens, and the residence. Each space has been transformed to host a new function, while its massive form and towering concrete walls were left virtually untouched to keep the structure's industrial identity intact. Externally, the cold facade of the existing volumes is softened by lush plants, climbing vines, and rooftop gardens, turning the rigid fortress into a whimsical abode.
